Organ Donation Statistics
Currently in the United States there are close to 100,000 people waiting for a donor organ. Of course, this number changes daily as people receive organs, new people need organs, and others on the list sadly die. Organ donation is an ever-changing field and the statistics are as well. However, at any given time the averages are the same. Currently, according to organ donation statistics, there are more than 71,000 people waiting for a kidney transplant. Approximately 17,000 are waiting for a liver transplant and 1,700 are waiting for a pancreas. There are around 2,300 waiting for a combination kidney/pancreas transplant and 2,800 waiting for a heart transplant. It’s interesting that most people think of a heart transplant when they think of organ donation services, but actually the top organ transplants are kidney and liver transplants. There are of course other statistics as well such as intestine and lung transplants, but the numbers change every day, sometimes every hour, so it’s hard to get a good grip on the actual number of transplant patients at any given time.
However, it is a fact that the list is so long because not enough donors are available. More people should be willing to donate their organs upon their death in order to save the lives of many.
